Freshen up your home for the Spring

One of the biggest tasks of Spring is Spring Cleaning! It’s almost the Spring Equinox, the days are getting longer and warmer and one of the best ways to rejuvenate yourself in order to tackle the rest of the year is to declutter, deep clean and let some new energy in.

Plan your cleaning and start with an easy task

When it comes to spring cleaning, not everything can be done in one day so it’s important to set the right priorities and break things down into manageable chunks. Everyone loves a good spring clean, even if it does feel like a massive headache to tackle a big clean. To avoid feeling completely overwhelmed divide your spring cleaning plan by tasks (such as decluttering, organising, and cleaning) as well as by rooms and spaces in the house. Be kind to yourself too! One day you might get two rooms done, one day you might only get the kitchen cupboards - it's all about pacing yourself and deciding what is important to you. De-motivation leads to procrastination so it's also important to begin with easy, manageable tasks - that way you don’t give up halfway through.

Declutter, donate, and determine what makes you happy

In 2019 we all became aware of Marie Kondo’s tips to ‘spark joy’ and it's absolutely true that sorting through your items and deciding what to keep and what to donate is a big part of spring cleaning. Letting go and freeing up space can generate lots of positive new energy in your home but it's also a great time to reflect on the things you decide to keep and to enjoy those precious memories. As many people continue to struggle in the pandemic and lockdown now is also a great time to donate items you no longer need such as clothes, books, bedding, and household items to charities.

Deep Clean

Once you’re all organised then it’s time to deep clean! Always make sure to focus on one room at a time to make the task more manageable. Some key things to add to your deep cleaning list are:
  1. Cleaning out cupboards, drawers, closets and wardrobes.
  2. Cleaning behind items you havent moved in a while.
  3. Cleaning out your appliances such as the fridge, washing machine and dishwasher.
  4. Cleaning all the surfaces as well as carpets and upholstery items.
  5. Fix anything thats broken like loose knobs, falling off handles, and chipped paint.
  6. Vacuum and dust in all the nooks and crannies - and make sure you let in lots of fresh air.
  7. And of course....

Dont forget to spring clean your blinds or curtains

It’s also very important to routinely clean your blinds and curtains! Here’s our handy tips for cleaning and keeping them in great shape:

  1. Always use clean cloth to wipe and clean your blinds.
  2. Avoid using cleaning products and detergent where possible to avoid damaging fabric and operating mechanism of your blinds.
  3. Avoid using oil or lubricating any part of your blind to prevent damage of your blind’s operating mechanism or the fabric.

We’ve also got some tips for cleaning specific blinds and curtains:

Roller Blinds and vertical blinds - For most of our roller and vertical blinds we advise you wipe them clean with a damp cloth and take care to avoid any abrasive detergents which might damage the material. If you have PVC, waterproof, or flame-resistant roller blinds then you can easily wipe and rinse them down without worry.

Roman Blinds and curtains - You should treat curtains and roman blinds like any other fabric or upholstery in your home. Make sure you vacuum them regularly, using the upholstery attachment, and clean any stains or marks off as soon as possible. Roman blinds can be tricky to clean because of the folds in the soft fabrics so we recommend that you lower them and clean them very gently. Make sure to also clean the windows as dust settles around roman blinds and curtains very easily. Curtains can be taken down and hand washed (we recommend soaking rather than rubbing) or you can use a steam cleaner on them. Once cleaned air drying is your best option to make sure the fabric isn’t damaged in any way. You can also take them to a dry cleaning company to extend their life and keep them looking gorgeous.

Wooden Blinds - Cleaning your wooden blinds is very easy and they require easy dusting between the slats and regular operation to avoid too much dust. If you’re cleaning real wood blinds we recommend you only use dry cloths and try to keep as much moisture away from the blinds as possible to prevent warping. If you have faux wood then they’re waterproof and so can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Shutters - Our shutters are a very popular choice and like our wooden blinds they’re available in both real and faux wood. We recommend that you keep them clean by regularly operating them to reduce the dust build-up, make sure you routinely dust them, and wipe down the slats. If they’re real wood make sure you keep them as free from moisture as possible to prevent warping.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds - One of the easiest blinds to clean, all you need to do is dust the slats every few months and operate them as normal to avoid too much dust accumulation.

Take time for yourself

Relaxing at home

Don’t forget - it’s not just about Spring cleaning your home, you should also think about Spring cleaning your finances, Spring cleaning your technology, and Spring cleaning yourself. After you’ve sorted out your living space take some time to relax, enjoy the feeling of a comfortable and organised space, and begin to prioritise your own needs, wants, and happiness.  After all that hard work it’ll definitely be time for a brew. Naturally, we recommend Yorkshire Tea. Happy cleaning everyone!
